Tag

I was tagged yesterday by Dzesika to come clean about what I'm listening to at the moment, and then spread the love around.

The rules:
List 7 songs you're into right now. No matter the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

1. Ralph Vaughan Williams--Toward the Unknown Region
2. Eric Clapton (live)--My Father's Eyes
3. Donald Fagan--What I Do
4. Vaughan Williams--Out of the Whirlwind
5. Louis Vierne--Prelude from Symphony 1
6. Henry Purcell--Music on the Death of Queen Mary
7. Elton John--Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters

Whose playlists would I like to see?

1. Queen Lizzie
2. Retropolitan
3. Jeffy-san (who will have to post his answers here, since he has no blog!)
4. Esbee (who, I imagine, does not have much time to obsess about music)
5. Jessica Woolf
6. Joshua
7. Derek Stubbs (who appears to have vanished permanently from Planet Earth)

You're it!

Wow - I don't recognize a single song on your list. I must be missing out on something!

Here's my 7 at the moment:

1. B. B. King -- How Blue Can You Get?
2. Boston -- Rock 'n Roll Band
3. Brian Setzer -- Glad All Over
4. Leon Redbone & Zooey Deschanel -- Baby It's Cold Outside
5. Ray Charles & Diana Krall -- You Don't Know Me
6. Roomful of Blues -- If You Know It
7. Stevie Ray Vaughan -- Pride and Joy

I was thinking the other day how much fun it is to share with friends good music that one has found. If the RIAA wouldn't have a hissy about it I had thought it would be cool to have a sort of audio blog where you could go and put up examples of what you are enjoying at the moment. Kind of a way to say 'Hey, check this out, I'm loving it lately.'

Hm.

1. Liz Phair -- "Why Can't I" (Live acoustic version featured by Rhapsody)

2. The North American Hallowe'en Prevention Initiative -- "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en?"

3. Freedy Johnston - "The Lucky One"

4. Olivia Newton-John - "Suddenly"

5. Mark Kozelek - "Follow You, Follow Me"

6. Yo La Tengo - "Did I Tell You"

7. Yo La Tengo - "The Cone of Silence"

I mentioned Olivia Newton-John in a recent post, and that got "Suddenly" stuck in my head. More like permanently burned into my head.

No one can question the security of your masculinity if you publicly admit to listening to (and loving) an Olivia Newton-John love ballad!

;-)

(In the interest of full disclosure, I once bought the 45 of her singing "A Little More Love," and, now that I mention it, maybe I'll wander over to the iTunes Music Store and see if it still exists...)

I love Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters.

Yeah, an awesome tune. I love Elton's voice back then, and this is one of the 5% of Bernie Taupin's lyrics which let one keep one's food down.

1. Joss Stone- "The Chokin Kind"
2. Martin Sexton- "Glory Bound"
3. Damien "Jr. Goings" Marley- "Road to Zion"
4. Simon & Garfunkel- "Only Living Boy in New York"
5. Dispatch- "Elias"
6. Cary Brothers- "Lovesong"
7. Iron and Wine- "Such Great Heights" (Postal Service cover)

Honorable mention Accustic Syndicate- "Brown Mountain Light". I am too much like "Rob" from High Fidelity. I need these lists to keep me going during the day, and they have to be specific and narrow: "Top 5 songs about death" is different from "Top five songs to be played at my funeral". And a list like this, WOW, it changes all the time. I excluded rap, because that would be "top songs to listen to while working out" and baroque would be "top five to listen to while reading" There is also "top songs in the car"...oh it just goes on and on, doesn't it?

See? I take this tag of Joshua as a bullseye! I never heard you talk too much about music, but I figured you'd have an unusual take on it.

Oddly for me, I can't stand music when I work out / walk / run. And I have favorite music for different things, but my top-of-the-heap people are the same for any occasion when it comes down to it. I don't denigrate popular music--I listen to it probably slightly more than I do my classical stuff, even though my collection is probably 75% classical--but my favorite stuff tends to be classical (Bach, Ravel, Durufle, Vaughan Williams).

This is all en exercise for me in popular stuff, tho, since (old guy that I am) a lot of thus stuff I've never heard of.

I listen to a lot of classical music, too. When I'm at my doctor's. Or my dentist. Getting a haircut.

Riding in elevators.

Waiting for an available operator...

Lots!

I think I don't talk about it because it is always there. Sort of like a soundtrack to my life: in the background, playing when I need it to highten some awareness I am missing.

This was a fun bit of nail biting for me. I feel now like I should have added a few others, taken one out, jeesh.

I'm going to bed to end it.
