Sweet Land of Stupid

From the AP:

Americans increasingly are convinced — incorrectly — that President Barack Obama is a Muslim, and a growing number are thoroughly confused about his religion.

Nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim, up from the 11 percent who said so in March 2009, according to a poll released Thursday. The proportion who correctly say he is a Christian is down to just 34 percent.

The largest share of people, 43 percent, said they don't know his religion, an increase from the 34 percent who said that in early 2009.

What's next? "Coming up on Faux: The 'spherical Earth' liberal conspiracy! Do you really think people in Australia are standing upside-down? Wake up to the lies!"

Jesus fucking Christ. People this stupid should be barred from voting. There should be a basic linear thinking test required before one can affect the lives of others. If you're "thoroughly confused" about Obama's religion, then you're thoroughly not paying attention to any credible source of information. (How can he be liable for being a member of Jeremiah Wright's congregation and for being a Muslim at the same time? Or is Jeremiah Wright a Muslim? Or have we forgotten that particular attack on his eligibility to hold the office? Or did we never believe that particular lie in the first place? It's so hard to keep up.)

Setting aside the fact that we are a country that trumpets religious liberty, and therefore it's perfectly possible for the President to be Buddhist or Shinto or Hindu or yes, Muslim; no person could get elected to the Presidency here without swearing some fealty to the Jesus myth. Still, we're "thoroughly confused."

But of course we're confused because we have plenty of people getting rich pumping out the lies and the fear and the hate.

Media Matters has a little coverage here. And Snopes takes on most of these claims here. Plus there's a little levity on the subject from Slate here.
