Eagles Klatch

Here's something you don't see everyday.

We were astonished to see this out our kitchen window this morning. It's not uncommon to see one or two, but we counted a population of ten bald eagles, one or two of which were usually on the wing. They're much bigger than one might think, and they're magnificent flyers. They scoop down and skim the river's surface and grab (PCB-laced) fish, which they carry up to the trees to eat.

On our first morning in this house, we awakened at about 5:am and were welcomed to the neighborhood by these awesome residents. During our subsequent spring and summer months, we've watched them feed and train their young. Before the young leave the nest they become very vocal while the parents look for food.

But I've never seen even half this many.

Keep an eagle eye on those little white puffballs that you've got roaming around your house. You can be sure that the eagles are.

It is great to be able to watch wildlife right outside your window, though, isn't it? We get to see quite a variety out our back windows and it never gets old.

We live right on the Mississippi, so at about this time of year we've got chicks like that in most of the trees. It's just the most amazing thing ...

... but yes, keep the dogs safe :)

How many times in a life do you get to use the word "klatch". Impressive.

One of the greatest thihngs about teaching climbing was the wildlife. I should dig up some pictures of the geckos running through the holds as my boys were trying to climb.
