I thought it was superbly cast and Mendes' direction was flawless. Winslet and Leo are two of my favorite actors and this finds them at the top of their craft. The combination of all these things along with the cinematography and set design does a great job of evoking the seeds of suburban malaise. Back then, I think people thought this was the height of civilization, but as the last 40 years have shown, it was perhaps the end. Cookie-cutter houses, cookie-cutter lives. Great if you just want to fit in, but not so great if you have any soul whatsoever. April is not quite ready to be a Stepford wife.<br /><br />All that being said, the movie still left me a little wanting. I'd rate it a strong B. And my criticism is not necessarily because it is almost universally depressing. I love plenty of movies that are.
